DB Engineer

RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Become the go-to person for database architecture and performance
• Contribute to design and development of the database access layer
• Ensure scalability and flexibility of underlying data models as new applications are designed and developed
• Work closely with and gain respect of software architects and DBAs in different teams
• Quantify trade-offs and use performance data to drive prioritization of performance issues
• Optimize top SQL statements, root-cause and fix deadlocks across the website
• Design and develop tools and infrastructure to enable developers to analyze and write more effective SQL statements
• Identify data that is better cached at the application level
• Contribute to architecture, design and code reviews
• Role model data driven analysis, optimization, design and development

REQUIREMENTS :

• Strong database experience - MySQL or Oracle
• Top-notch ability to write lightning quick SQL queries
• Strong analytical, performance, data modeling, design and architecture skills
• Knowledge of database internals
• Knowledge of visualization / reporting software
• Experience working on websites with very high transaction volumes
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and proven ability to work effectively across multiple teams
• Experience developing Object-Relational-Mapping software preferred
• Low-level systems skills preferred
• BS or MS degree in Computer Science preferred

Capacity Planning Engineer

RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Become the go-to person for capacity utilization data for webservers, databases, and networks
• Develop methodology and determine metrics to collect
• Design and develop efficient data collection, storage, organization and retrieval mechanisms
• Monitor capacity utilization after releases to identify outlier systems
• Publish capacity utilization data and analysis to aid equipment purchase decisions
• Help the systems, databases and network teams quantify their capacity needs pro-actively based on analysis
• Identify capacity related issues pro-actively to reduce production website incidents
• Contribute to design and development of Operational Data Store, monitoring agents and infrastructure services that expose the data

REQUIREMENTS :

• Strong database experience - MySQL preferred
• Strong analytical, performance, and capacity planning skills
• Experience with scripting languages, e.g., Python, PHP or Perl
• Knowledge of visualization software and reporting tools
• Experience working on websites with very high transaction volumes
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and proven ability to work effectively across multiple teams
• BS or MS degree in Computer Science preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Work closely with business users and product managers to determine how the data we collect could help solve their problems
• Apply your expertise in statistical inference, data mining, and the presentation of data to help inform and support our business and product decisions
• Work with the data infrastructure team to translate the business requirements into technical specifications
• Possess a thorough understanding of our data collection methods
• Develop reports and monitor the validity of the data being reported

REQUIREMENTS :

• Data junkie
• The ability to communicate the results of your analyses in a clear and effective manner
• Crazy Excel skills or experience with data reporting and analysis tools such as Spotfire, Business Objects, Cognos, Tableau, et al
• Experience with R, Matlab, SAS, SPSS, or a similar tool for data analysis
• Understanding of the methodologies of the major internet audience measurement firms: comScore Media Metrix, Nielsen//NetRatings, Hitwise, Quantcast, Alexa, Compete
• Basic knowledge of relational databases and SQL
• Strong willingness to contribute to a small team
